It is the most useful number Spotify publishes, because it describes the middle of the distribution rather than the top. For context from the same release: more than 13,800 artists generated at least $100,000, and more than 1,500 generated over $1 million.
One caution. These are royalties generated, not money received. What reaches the artist depends entirely on the contract behind the recording.
